Message from the Dean

Dear Colin Powell School Community,

I look forward to returning to the Colin Powell School full-time as dean in a few weeks. I have been a part of the CCNY community for more than fifteen years. Over that time, my belief in our mission has strengthened; my appreciation for the transformative potential of our extraordinary students in a diverse society has deepened. At the Colin Powell School, our faculty and staff—our programs and initiatives—represent some of the best that CCNY has to offer in ways that connect directly to our city, its people and its problems.

We are in a moment of constrained resources at the College and operating in a political setting, beyond our campus, where some in power question the value of affordable public higher education. Yet the fulfillment of our mission at the Colin Powell School—the advancement of our values of service, engagement, and leadership—signals the possibilities for a better future for all of us. The success of our students remains a remarkable testament to the importance of our work and to our capacity to thrive.

I am pleased to report that Professor Kevin Foster has agreed to stay on as Associate Dean once I am underway. Kevin stepped in as Interim Dean back in late 2016, never expecting that his term might last more than two years. He has stewarded the school with effectiveness and without a complaint ever since. I am very happy that he will continue to serve the Colin Powell School in the dean’s office.

I begin full-time on Monday, February 25th, but I am already on email at arich@ccny.cuny.edu. I look forward to seeing you soon and to working together on the Colin Powell School’s next chapter.

Best wishes,
